Savour the Bumps!

Starting a New Business Series – Part 1

Hello fellow entrepreneurs!

So you’ve discovered your breakthrough idea and made the decision to jump in and become a business owner. Congratulations! You’re part of a unique group of people in the world with the courage to try something that scares everybody else.
In this weekly series I’m going to start talking about all the nitty gritty details involved in starting your own business. You know, the stuff everybody glosses over while they fixate over their new idea, the stuff behind the curtain so to speak.

There are a lot of logistics to deal with when you’re first starting up, or if you’ve been doing business for a while, a lot of unresolved questions. I’m going to try to work through some of the critical topics that affect all business owners, shed some light on them, while providing resources to help you succeed. Some of the topics that I plan to cover are:

  • how to purchase your own domain (mycompany.com)
  • how to choose an email provider & get a custom email address (name@mycompany.com)
  • how to launch your own website (www.mycompany.com)
  • how to launch email campaigns and track customer subscriptions
  • how to choose office and collaboration software
  • how to choose accounting software
  • how to choose wifi equipment for your new office
  • how to choose storage, cloud or on-site?
  • choosing a computer for your new business
  • how to choose an office printer or copier
  • how to determine your backup strategy
  • how to prepare for trade shows

I’ll start with the most urgent topics (for when you’re starting up) and continue through some of the more nuanced details (for those who have been operational for a while). Please comment on the list of topics and let me know which affect you the most and which you would like me to cover first. If you don’t see a topic that you’re curious about, leave a comment and I’ll do my best to cover it.

Most importantly, I’m going to try to encourage you on your journey. A wiser older entrepreneur once told me:

It’s the journey to the top of the mountain that will give you the most pleasure. Once you’re at the top, the excitement is fleeting, and it won’t be long before you’re looking for your next adventure.

So enjoy the journey my friends, surround yourself with supportive people and savour the bumps…together!

Until next time,
